SCC snapped a six-game losing streak by upending Cottey College 89-80, Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Truman Center.
The Lady Storm overcame a slow start where they fell behind 6-0, and turned the ball over four times in the opening minutes. Head Coach Lynn Schlake took a timeout, and the coach said his message was to just "focus". SCC regrouped with better ball security, and powered ahead to a 23-20 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
Both teams played even in the 2nd quarter, scoring 17 points each. Southeast went into the break with a 40-37 advantage.
The 3rd quarter proved to be the decisive quarter of the game, as Southeat outscored Cottey 23-16. Both teams had 26 points in the 4th quarter.
Schlake said his team's depth was in their favor. Cottey College had just seven players on the roster, with two to rotate off the bench. The coach was able to freely rotate and keep the starters fresh.
Southeast had four players in double figures. Erika Goracke and Sebit Gatlauk each had 17 points. Marcia Hawkins turned in a double/double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. And Madison Hajek paced the offense with 15 points and six assists.
All five Cottey starters hit double digits in scoring, led by Katrina Cantu's 18 points.
The Lady Storm improve to 7-15 overall with the win. They travel to Central Community College on Friday, Feb. 2 to take on conference foe Central Community College.
